How Substack Blurbs Increase Your Subscribers
Gain subscribers by recommending other newsletters
If you’re new to Substack, you’re probably feeling a bit overwhelmed.
There’s a lot to figure out.
Here’s a writing hack to consider.
When it comes to gaining subscribers, recommendations and blurbs can help.
Blurbs are recommendations
Recommendations help you find new subscribers. If another publication recommends your publication, their readers will see you, and they may subscribe.
When others write a little blurb about your publication in their recommendation, it will show up on your welcome page. That builds credibility with your readers.
How do you get good blurbs? One way is to write good blurbs for publications that you enjoy.
You can manage how these blurbs appear on your welcome page.
Go to Settings, then scroll down to this option:
Words In Motion is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider subscribing.
How to recommend other publications
Go to your Dashboard, then select Recommendations.
You will see a list of publications that you are subscribed to. You can recommend them to your readers by clicking the Add button on the right.
I want to show my recommendations on my Substack homepage, so I’ve clicked the box below. Do I want to help out these great publications by including my recommendations in Substack digests? Hell ya!
The last step is to write a blurb for each of your recommended publications. This will tell readers what you like about this publication.
Don’t overthink this step. If you’re stuck, look at the publication’s About page for some ideas.
Here’s how to manage the blurbs (see the bottom of the screenshot).
Congratulations! You’re on your way to increasing your subscriber base!
