Most poetry collections are arranged in sections, not chapters. Each section might have poems that address a specific topic or have a theme or style to the poem.
We Swallow Light: Poems for introverts and lonely hearts (Life Poetry)
This book of poetry is arranged like a fictional novel.
I created chapters that follow a story thread, similar to a memoir. My chapter titles are:
The Binding
Surrender
The Passage
The Rituals
Choosing Love
When I studied the Story Grid techniques, I discovered the 5 commandments of storytelling and applied them to my new book.
The second chapter is Surrender, and it contains the Turning Point/Progressive Complication of the story.
The protagonist takes small steps that sometimes succeed and sometimes fail, trying to get closer to their goal. Small crises build on one another, pushing the protagonist to change tactics.
Here’s a quote from one of the poems:
Tendrils of Uncertainty
“An uncertainty of smoke
brings a mercury of shades
of shifting, drifting points of view.
It stands in many shoes.
A varietal of tastes
brings a shift in realization
and the light of possibility
reveals a truth.”
The uncertainty takes root.
Its tendrils slide beneath the door
and slip into the cracks.”
I hope you like this take on the second chapter in the book.
