A surety of black and white
observes it all with sharpened eyes
that narrow in their judgment.
With urgency, assessments made
slicing and arranging
according to the formula
knowing they are right.
An uncertainty of smoke
brings a mercury of shades
of shifting, drifting points of view.
It stands in many shoes.
A varietal of tastes
brings a shift in realization
and the light of possibility
reveals a truth.
The uncertainty takes root.
Its tendrils slide beneath the door
and slip into the cracks.
Not knowing
is a seething rise of bile:
a clenching of denial
that turns its face away.
Faith appears
with a side-eyed look
and throws the windows wide.
Then standing in the gale
I step toward the fear
and breathe.
Allowance is an opening.
The body is a sensing field
receiving each impression
then the letting go releases them.
I gently slide the feelers out
and cast into the burbling stream
where each stone sounds a different note
a flight of liquid magic brings
expansion in a drift of mist.
This poem originally appears in my book, We Swallow Light. It’s an exploration of events in a past life and a refreshing take on overcoming pain and the joy of finding love.
