Most poetry collections are arranged in sections. Each section might have poems that address a specific topic or have a theme or style to the poem.
There might be a section for poetry written as Haiku and another one with Limericks. A book might have sections with poems about the Environment or Love.
We Swallow Light: Poems for introverts and lonely hearts (Life Poetry)
This book of poetry is arranged in chapters, similar to a work of fiction.
I created chapters that follow a story thread, similar to a work of fiction. My chapter titles are:
The Binding
Surrender
The Passage
The Rituals
Choosing Love
As a student of the Story Grid, I discovered the 5 commandments of storytelling and have applied them to my new book.
The first chapter is The Binding, and it contains the Inciting Incident of the story.
That’s the event that gets the protagonist moving in a different direction. In the hero’s journey, they usually leave their home, embarking on a quest or journey.
Here’s a quote from one of the poems:
Braving the Fire
“Fear resists the service.
The silence of the streets
unnerves me.
I repeat reminders:
rehearse the mantra.
Take care.
Protect yourself.
Stay back.
Survive.
Bound by duty
I gird my loins.
My focus shifts.
It’s time to tie the mask.
I take a breath
and step onto the field.”
This is a very different way to organize a book of poetry.
