A few years ago, I joined an online writing group.

No surprise. Most people here have done that.

Every day, we got a prompt and did a mind dump. We wrote what came up for us, without editing or worrying about how it would sound. If we wanted, we could share them in the group. It was my first attempt at writing to a regular prompt and it brought up a lot of memories from my past.

I was excited at what my words would reveal. Sometimes what came up was awful and I dreaded sharing. Reading about the experiences of others changed my perspective. That helped a lot.

I realized we all struggle sometimes.

They were a great group of supportive people and some of them became friends.

We were committed to what we called vulnerable honesty and we revealed our souls to each other. I learned a lot and really appreciate their friendship.

Some of us still talk.

We talked about everything. Raising children, getting along with troublesome bosses, and the nature of spirit in the universe.

Then the subject of guardian angels came up.

Several people said they often asked their angels and guides for help. It wasn’t something I’d considered. Asking for help? That was way out of my comfort zone.

I’ve never imagined I had a guardian angel.

Sometimes I noticed a rush of positive feelings when I made a good decision, but I didn’t think about it much.

Having a guardian angel would be nice, but I wasn’t buying it. Sounded like something out of Sunday school, and that didn’t appeal to me at all.

But, I’m pretty sure someone protected me when I was a teenager.

I made some spectacularly poor life decisions, so maybe the universe was relieved when I made a good one.

Maybe it was trying to encourage me to make more of the better ones.

When I tried to talk with angels it felt weird

I had no idea how to talk to an invisible being I wasn’t sure existed.

It was like talking out loud to Santa, or the Tooth Fairy.

My friends used ‘Angel Cards’ to make a connection. I was curious and wondered if they’d work for me. If you don’t know, Angel Cards come in a bunch of different decks. Their purpose is to answer your questions in a supportive way.

I decided I needed some of this “angel magic” so I ordered some online.

The one I chose was called “Messages from Your Angels”.

The cards came in a lovely box with an image of a beautiful woman with soft white wings. Inside there were instructions. Each card was for a different angel and each one had a special message. They were beautiful, but I still wasn’t convinced they’d work for me.

I gave it my best shot.

Every day, I lit a white candle (white is apparently important) and shuffled the deck with intention.

Every day I drew a card and read the message, trying to make sense of it. While I enjoyed the inspiring messages, I felt I wasn’t doing it right.

Somehow I still didn’t ‘get’ it.

I knew I needed help.

That night I was getting ready to go out for dinner with friends.

I decided it was time to ask for help.
I stood in front of my mirror and said:

“I don’t know how to do this. I need help. Show me what I’m not aware of.”

“Please bring me a sign to let me know angels exist.”
